April 9, 2007 James Avery Donates $30,000 to Schreiner UniversityKERRVILLE, TX – James Avery continues its long-term commitment to supporting higher education and the Kerrville community with a contribution of $30,000 to Schreiner University’s Hill Country College Fund (HCCF). Over the past 15 years, the company has donated more than $400,000 to Hill Country College Fund and has established the James Avery Endowed Scholarship with the purpose of providing scholarship funding for Hill Country Schreiner students in perpetuity.
Chris Avery established the endowed scholarship on December 3, 2003 in honor of his father, company founder James Avery. Mr. Avery has been a long-time supporter of Schreiner University, having served as chairman of the Hill Country College Fund in 1980-81. “We have a deep commitment to giving back to the communities that have been so supportive of James Avery over the years,” said Chris Avery. “But we reserve a special place for our hometown of Kerrville and we’re especially proud to support Schreiner University and higher education right here in the Hill Country.” The Hill Country College Fund was established in 1977 to aid worthy and deserving Hill Country students enrolled in Schreiner University. Since then, it has provided more than $8 million in need-based tuition assistance to residents of Kerr, Kimble, Kendall, Bandera, Gillespie, Real and Edwards counties and helps more than 250 students annually. “James Avery has given generously to the Hill Country College Fund for so many years,” said Dr. Tim Summerlin, president of Schreiner University. “This company sets the standard for corporate citizenship in our community and beyond the region. Every year they have shown how deeply they believe in higher education here in Kerrville.” Hill Country College Fund grants provide an average of more than $2,900 a year per recipient and one hundred percent of funds raised goes to student scholarships.
