How to Layer Necklaces: A Guide to Lengths, Chains, Charms & Pendants
There's something about combining a few favorite necklaces that makes any look feel truly personalized. A meaningful pendant on a favorite chain, or a charm that reminds you of a special place or moment. Worn together, they create a look that makes an outfit feel more intentional and put together.
In this guide, we'll walk through how to choose necklace lengths, combine chain styles, build two- and three-necklace combinations and create balance with charms and pendants.
Getting Started: The Art of Necklace Layering
The Layers
Think of each chain or necklace as having a specific role:
The Foundation Layer: The necklace that sets the direction for everything else. This is often your shortest chain or the necklace you wear most often.
The Focal Layer: The design that naturally draws attention. This could be a charm necklace, pendant, cross, birthstone or another meaningful symbol.
The Finishing Layer (Optional): A longer necklace that adds balance, texture or extra visual interest, but not every stack needs all three. We also love the way just two necklace layers look!
Contrast & Variety
To help make every layer feel carefully curated, try varying:
- Lengths
- Chain Textures
- Link Styles
- Chain Weights
- Pendant/Charm Sizes
- Metal Colors
- Gemstone or Enamel Accents
The more you mix, match and play with different styles and lengths, the more your necklace stack will feel fresh and all you!
Keep It Meaningful
When in doubt, start with a necklace that means the most to you.
Maybe it's a cross you've worn for years. An initial. A birthstone. A charm that reminds you of a favorite place or an important milestone.
Once you've chosen your focal layer, the supporting layers simply accent it.
Layering 101: How to Choose Your Necklace and Chain Lengths
An important thing to remember is the same chain length can sit differently from person to person depending on:
- Your Height
- Neck Circumference
- Torso Length
- Pendant Size
- Clothing Necklines
Give Each Layer a Little Breathing Room
For many necklace combinations, one to two inches between layers is a helpful place to start.
You may want a little more space if:
- Both necklaces have pendants or charms
- One pendant is larger than the other
- The chains are similar in texture and weight
You may need less space if you're intentionally creating a more maximalist or chunky layered look, which we also love!

16-18 inches Everyday short layer
18-20 inches Focal layer
20-24 inches Finishing layer
24+ inches Longer statement layer

A Note on Necklines
Certain necklace lengths tend to complement certain necklines, but these are general tips, not hard rules.
The best part about necklace stacks is that they are a beautiful finishing touch to any outfit, and even if you can’t see all the necklaces, just a hint of them makes your look feel intentional and elevated.
Crew necks
Try layers that sit clearly above or below the neckline rather than directly on the edge.
V-necks
Pendant necklaces often work beautifully because they naturally follow the shape of the neckline.
Scoop necks
Graduated layers can help fill the open space without overwhelming it.
Open button-down shirts
A short chain and middle-length pendant often fit naturally within the open collar.
Strapless necklines
This is one of the easiest necklines for multiple layers because there's plenty of open space to work with.
How to Layer Two Necklaces
Two necklaces are often the easiest place to start and look great with most everyday outfits and necklines.
Idea 1: Short Chain + Longer Chain with Pendant
This is one of the most versatile combinations.
Start with a shorter chain and add a pendant necklace below it. The shorter chain creates structure while the pendant becomes the focal point.
Idea 2: Small Charm or Pendant + Textural Chain
Wear a small pendant at the shorter length, then add a chain with a different link style below it.
The contrast in texture creates interest without needing two pendants.
Idea 3: Charm Necklace + Simple Chain
Charm necklaces often draw the eye, so when layering on another necklace, less is more.
Then add a simple supporting chain that sits above or below it. If your charm necklace features several charms, keeping the second layer minimal creates the most balance.
How to Layer Three or More Necklaces
This one’s for those who love a more maximalist style! For these, we typically follow a short, middle, long structure. Though there’s always room to play!
A simple three-necklace combination often looks like:
- A short foundation chain
- A middle focal layer
- A longer finishing layer
Keeping a clear progression makes the stack feel put together. But if you love a more “carefree” style, you can layer the chains and necklaces in closer lengths and even cluster charms and pendants together.
Designer Tip: If the look feels crowded:
- Remove the layer that provides the least contrast or interest
- Increase the spacing between the necklaces or chains
- Replace one pendant necklace with a simple chain
Ultimately, it’s up to you if you want your necklace layers to feel more polished and styled or a little more natural and carefree. Either way, creating your own necklace stack is the perfect way to complete an outfit.

Frequently Asked Necklace Layering Questions
What necklace lengths work best for layering?
To get started, we recommend visiting our Necklace & Chain Size guide so you can see how certain lengths will fit you. The necklace length you choose as your foundation will also be determined by how close to the neck you want your necklaces to sit. If you want a choker-style fit, start with a shorter length like 16” or 18”. If you prefer a more natural collar bone length, start with 18” or 20”. Many of our necklaces also come in adjustable lengths up to 17” or 20” so you can adjust as needed.
How many necklaces should I layer?
The number of necklaces you layer is completely up to you and the look you’re going for. If you prefer a minimal, simple look, we recommend wearing two lighter necklaces and chains. For a more textured, layered style, we recommend three or more.
How do you layer necklaces without them tangling?
To keep your necklaces from tangling, it’s best to make sure every layer has space to move without catching on another chain. You can also vary chain weights and textures, as similar chains tend to tangle easier.
To minimize tangling when you aren’t wearing them, we recommend storing them with their clasps fastened (as though you were wearing them) and in individual baggies or compartments.
Designer Tip: Put necklaces and chains on from shortest to longest so you can keep them from tangling.
Can you layer more than one pendant necklace?
Yes! Layering multiple pendant necklaces can add depth and personality to your look. For the best balance, wear pendants at different lengths and vary their size. Let one pendant take center stage while the others play a supporting role. If your layers feel a bit busy, try replacing one pendant necklace with a simple chain.
What chain styles work well for layering?
We have so many chain styles to choose from, from simple and delicate to bold and textured. Mixing different textures and chain weights adds depth while beautifully complementing your favorite charms and pendants. They also make great accents all on their own.
How should I store my necklaces?
Store layered necklaces separately to help prevent tangles. Before putting them away, unclasp your layers and fasten each necklace individually. Store them on separate hooks or in individual compartments / pouches so chains have room to rest without crossing over one another. Avoid leaving delicate chains loose in a single pile, as they can knot or catch on neighboring pieces. For more jewelry care tips, visit our Care & Cleaning Guide.
